ASPT Inducts Three New Members; Confers 2004 Swormstedt Award & Names Officers
MINNEAPOLIS - The Academy of Screen Printing Technology has inducted three new members — Charlie Taublieb, Bruce Ridge, and Joe Raymond — to its ranks this year.
Announcement of the new ASPT members and the Academy’s 2004 Swormstedt Award recipient for technical writing and was made at the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association’s 56th annual Convention and Exposition, held October 6-9 at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.
New ASPT members are selected by their peers as recognized screen printing authorities and chosen on the basis of their demonstrated ability and willingness to assist in improving the industry. The prestigious Academy fosters the development of technological advances in the specialty graphic imaging industry through encouraging publication of new technical papers related to screen printing.
Papers which meet the Academy’s exacting standards of technology, accuracy and pertinence, may be published in the SGIA Journal and later incorporated into the Association’s Technical Guidebook series.
New ASPT Members
Taublieb has owned and operated several companies — i.e., Great American Screen Designs, Ltd. and Bullseye Screen Printing Supplies, Inc. He has written numerous articles on myriad topics for the industry’s press and publishes a monthly column, “Printing with Charlie,” in Impressions magazine.
In addition to establishing a popular “Hand-on Screen Printing Workshop” conducted at a variety of industry events, including SGIA’s annual Convention & Exposition, he also conducts the Screen Printing Technical Foundation’s “Specialty Inks: Enhance Your Textile Prints” workshop, as well as serves as Marketing Director for Fassi Equipment in Miami.
A graduate of Western Michigan University with a B.S. in Fine Art, Taublieb majored in painting, with a minor in print making and drawing. He is a member of CORE New Art Space, where he exhibits his artwork.
Having served as a judge at most of the annual Golden Image Award and Impressions Competitions over the past years (and a winner, himself, of several Golden Image Awards when he was a printer), Charlie Taublieb was voted “Best Industry Consultant” in a the most recent survey conducted by Impressions magazine.
Bruce Ridge has been part of the screen printing industry since starting his first business in 1976—producing local advertising and art prints. While attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, he continued his home business until graduating in 1985 with a Bachelors degree in Printing Management.
Following graduation, Bruce joined SGIA and created Original Reproductions. During his seven years of business, Bruce’s company was awarded four Golden Image Awards in the fine art and poster categories.
Since 1993, Bruce Ridge has been employed by Nazdar … as a sales representative, first, and — most recently — as Director of Product Training where he has focused his efforts on bringing education and training opportunities to the screen printing community across North America.
Beginning in 1973, Joe Raymond spent 15 years in screen printing and fabrication including the production of nameplates and panels, membrane switches, textiles, and point-of-purchase work. He was owner of Custom Prints Plus.
He then joined Nor-Cote International, where he worked for eight years as a Technical Service Manager. The next six years saw him working for KIWO—installing training and updating KIWOMAT coating machines throughout the world.
Now employed as Business Manager for Stencil Products at Autotype Americas, Joe Raymond has brought successful new emulsion products to market including development of Capillex CP and CX films. In addition, he is an accomplished author and speaker.
